One of them mentions somebody who hid in a barn on the hills above Eyam, just like the children in my story. There's just enough for them to get a feel for this time in history and hopefully inspire further learning.

Children of Winter

The story is inspired by the story of the Derbyshire village of Eyam, who, when discovering that the plague had travelled to dhildren remote village in a bundle of clothes brought from a nearby city, decided to shut themselves off from their friends and neighbours to stop the plague spreading.

There are many barns just like it all over Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Alright, if you're an expert on the subject you could probably pick holes in it, but remember that this is aimed at children. Refresh and try again. It's a quick read, and I've revisited it often! Children of Winter is set at the time of the Great Plague inthough it begins in the Derbyshire of today.

Continue as a Guest. This site uses cookies. Loved this book when I was younger and read it again as an adult. I thought them all terribly brave and couldn't believe that one village had taken such a brave stance against a seemingly unbeatable enemy.
